Like mother, like daughter?

September 16, 2009

I had an interesting discussion with my eight year-old daughter after I got home from my weekend residency Sunday evening. She is in 3rd grade, and was complaining that some of her classmates don’t take their work seriously, and that they didn’t get to do social studies on Friday. She went on to say that if they didn’t start to work harder in school, they wouldn’t get in to a good college. Here’s how the conversation went:

Me: “so you’re still planning to go to college?”
Maggie: “yes, and I want to go to Syracuse just like you, mom”
Me (beaming with pride): “really? maybe you can be a librarian like me too.”
Maggie (with much disdain in her voice): “no way mom. I’m going to be a lawyer.”

Oh well, I have a good ten years to work on her.
